Set up by a Permanent Council Decision dated 23 July 1998, the Centre commenced its activities in January 1999. With its mandate spanning all three OSCE dimensions, the Centre works on a broad array of security issues, from arms control to economic and environmental topics, to human rights.

On 24 and 25 September 2025, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, with support from the OSCE Secretariat’s Action Against Terrorism Unit, held a training course on media and information literacy in preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (P/CVERLT) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

OSCE promotes youth engagement in climate change issues in Turkmenistan
Some thirty-five students from Turkmenistan’s institutions of higher education participated in an OSCE organized workshop entitled “Youth Negotiation on Climate, Security and Co-operation: OSCE Best Practices” that took place in Ashgabat on 29 July 2025.
The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat organized this event to build practical negotiation and diplomacy skills of youth representatives who have been participating in the ongoing UNICEF Youth Climate Summer School 2025.

First aid and emergency response in focus of OSCE Training of Trainers Course for border guards in Turkmenistan
An OSCE-organized Tactical Medical Training of Trainers (ToT) Course, took place from 20 to 22 May 2025 in Ashgabat. The course brought together thirty-one participants, including border guards who work in remote areas serving as first responders to emergencies and incidents, and specializing in rescue operations as well as doctors from the Central Hospital for Border Guards.
